The Official Seal of the City of Kingston, New York

City Seal

James Kaman, Hurley, NY

Design Specifications:
The official seal of the City of Kingston, New York shall consist of a circular device with the words "City of Kingston, New York" at the top and the date "1652" at the bottom. Also in the outer ring of the circle shall be the traditional olive branch. The pictorial symbols shall consist of: The Senate House, a Hudson River Sloop shown in full sail upon the River, the Catskill Mountains in the background with the Sun rising over the scene.

Design Explantions:
The Senate House represents Kingston's contribution, as first Capitol, to the history of New York State.

The Catskill Mountains are a symbol of majesty and permanence.

The famous Hudson River Sloop reminds us of the commercial and travel purposes of the River.

The Sun with its radial beams brings a constant promise of Kingston's bright future built firmly upon a noble past.

The olive branches depict peaceful aspirations.

The design as a whole is a significant but not radical departure from the older City Seal. It is emblematical, historical, harmonious.
