The Kingston Police Department is a 74 member force, with 8 dispatchers, and 5 civilian staff, serving a residential population of 23,000 people, in a 7.4 square mile area. This population swells to over 55,000 daytime, due to the work forces, schools and light industries in and around the City. It is also very near the New York State Thruway (Exit 19), which provides easy exit points for travelers to the City.

The Kingston Police Department has New York State Accreditation and the Department's motto is "Committed to Excellence". The Police Department consists of the Uniformed Patrol Division, the Detective Division, the Administrative Division and the Narcotics Unit. Some of the other units and programs are the S.R.O. program, with three full time officers, and an Emergency Services Unit.
