    Historic Churches

Kingston is home to many historic churches. The oldest church still standing is the First Reformed Protestant Dutch Church of Kingston which was organized in 1659. Referred to as The Old Dutch Church, it is located in Uptown Kingston. Many of the city's historic churches populate Wurts street (6 in one block) among them Hudson Valley Wedding Chapel is a recently restored church built in 1867 and now a chapel hosting weddings. Another church in the Rondout is located at 72 Spring Street. Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church was founded in 1849. The original church building at the corner of Hunter Street and Ravine Street burned to the ground in the late 1850s. The current church on Spring Street was built in 1874.

Kingston became New York's first capital in 1777, and was burned by the British on October 13, 1777, after the Battles of Saratoga. In the 19th century, the city became an important transport hub after the discovery of natural cement in the region, and had both railroad and canal connections.

    Kingston, NY

The town of Rondout, New York, now a part of the city of Kingston, became an important freight hub for the transportation of coal from Honesdale, Pennsylvania to New York City through the Delaware and Hudson Canal. This hub was later used to transport other goods, including bluestone. Kingston shaped and shipped most of the bluestone made to create the sidewalks of New York City.

3/27/2025 - Mayor Noble Announces Kingston Police Department Community Response Team

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Mayor Noble Announces Kingston Police Department Community Response Team

KINGSTON, NY – Mayor Steven T. Noble is pleased to announce that the Kingston Police Department has launched a Community Response Team (CRT), a small, focused group of officers who will perform evidence-based policing techniques and information gathering.

The Community Response Team is currently made up of 12 Kingston Police officers who have volunteered to take on additional responsibilities beyond their regular patrol duties. These officers will be working closely with members of the Detective Division and a Crime Analyst from the Hudson Valley Crime Analysis Center to determine “hot spots” in the community where additional services may be needed.

Mayor Noble said, “We know the best way to have a safer city is to work with the community to meet our goals. This innovative approach developed by Chief Tinti and our leadership brings together the best resources we have, which are our hardworking and knowledgeable officers of the Kingston Police Department. This team will allow for information to seamlessly be shared across shifts and across jurisdictions with our continued partnership with the Town of Ulster Police Department. My administration is always looking for new ways to help our community and with the launch of our new Community Response Team, we are going to make further strides in ensuring our community is safe for all who live, work, or visit here.”

Kingston Police Chief Egidio Tinti said, “The new team will be implementing problem-oriented policing techniques, focusing on specific locations in the community, areas selected based on evidence and analysis. By investigating and monitoring areas that are deemed problematic by data and assessing the needs, we can then work across departments and agencies to solve problems. Whether it’s partnering with AVERT, ORACLE, or handing a situation over to the Building Department, as we work together, we will figure out what resources are needed.”

The Community Response Team will be assigned specific locations and tasks during regular patrol hours, will submit daily reports to command staff and the Crime Analyst, which will be used to determine the next steps. Officers will continue to be assigned to their respective shifts, allowing greater coverage for information gathering and problem solving beyond the traditional unit approach.

The Kingston Police Department continues to partner with the Town of Ulster Police Department with shared resources to benefit and protect both communities.
