    Kingston, dating to the arrival of the Dutch in 1652, is a vibrant city with rich history and architecture, was the state's first capital, and a thriving arts community. City Hall is in the heart of the community at 420 Broadway, and is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., except July & August (9 a.m. to 4 p.m.).  Come tour our historic City, with restaurants that are among the region's finest, and local shopping that promises unique finds.

    Historic Churches

    Kingston is home to many historic churches. The oldest church still standing is the First Reformed Protestant Dutch Church of Kingston which was organized in 1659. Referred to as The Old Dutch Church, it is located in Uptown Kingston. Many of the city's historic churches populate Wurts street (6 in one block) among them Hudson Valley Wedding Chapel is a recently restored church built in 1867 and now a chapel hosting weddings. Another church in the Rondout is located at 72 Spring Street. Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church was founded in 1849. The original church building at the corner of Hunter Street and Ravine Street burned to the ground in the late 1850s. The current church on Spring Street was built in 1874.

    Kingston became New York's first capital in 1777, and was burned by the British on October 13, 1777, after the Battles of Saratoga. In the 19th century, the city became an important transport hub after the discovery of natural cement in the region, and had both railroad and canal connections.

    The town of Rondout, New York, now a part of the city of Kingston, became an important freight hub for the transportation of coal from Honesdale, Pennsylvania to New York City through the Delaware and Hudson Canal. This hub was later used to transport other goods, including bluestone. Kingston shaped and shipped most of the bluestone made to create the sidewalks of New York City.

    2/20/2026 - Pike Plan Construction Update

    Pike Plan Construction Update

    Week of February 16, 2026

    Removal is at approximately 90% completion. 

    Wall St. demolition is expected be completed Friday, February 20. The corner of N. Front and Wall Street (at Buns) is expected be completed on Monday, February 23.

    Masons will continue working on brick and stone repair as well as bluestone sidewalk replacement and punchlist items next week.

     

    Week of February 9, 2026

    Removal is now approximately 65% complete.

    The contractor will begin restoring missing sidewalk areas next week with bluestone and brick to match surrounding sidewalk.

    No Parking restrictions on Wall and N. Front will remain in effect next week as deconstruction continues.

    Once deconstruction is complete, the City will go out to bid for additional restoration for the building facades.

     

    Week of February 2, 2026

    Pike Plan removal continued this week despite the frigid temps, and is approximately 50% completed. 

    Three crews are now working on Wall Street, while one crew remains on Front Street. Care is being taken to weather- and waterproof the exteriors of each building as crews work their way down the blocks.

     

    Week of January 26, 2026

    Pike Plan removal continued this week, despite the extremely frigid temps. Constructions is about 35% completed. 

    Four crews are working simultaneously, with one crew working on Wall Street going south, one crew finished work on N. Front and will move to Wall Street south end, a third crew continues work on N. Front and working east. The fourth crew finished in N. Front and is moving to Wall Street south end.

     

    Week of January 20, 2026

    Construction continued this week, moving inward from all four ends of N. Front Street. One of the teams has rounded the corner and begun working on Wall Street.

    ?Care has been made, working with owners and tenants, to ensure continuous access to all storefronts.

    Due to the snow storm, the contractor expects to work Tuesday to Friday next week. 


    Week of January 12, 2026

    Construction began this week at all four corners of N. Front Street with progress moving inward.

    The first two days included mobilization, setup, and electrical disconnection. The remaining three days this week were devoted to demolition. To date, the project is about 10% complete. Care has been made, working with owners and tenants, to ensure continuous access to all storefronts. 

    Work will continue next week including work on Monday. Work on North Front is expected to last at least 2 more weeks, then work will move on to Wall St.
