    Kingston, dating to the arrival of the Dutch in 1652, is a vibrant city with rich history and architecture, was the state's first capital, and a thriving arts community. City Hall is in the heart of the community at 420 Broadway, and is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., except July & August (9 a.m. to 4 p.m.).  Come tour our historic City, with restaurants that are among the region's finest, and local shopping that promises unique finds.

    Historic Churches

    Kingston is home to many historic churches. The oldest church still standing is the First Reformed Protestant Dutch Church of Kingston which was organized in 1659. Referred to as The Old Dutch Church, it is located in Uptown Kingston. Many of the city's historic churches populate Wurts street (6 in one block) among them Hudson Valley Wedding Chapel is a recently restored church built in 1867 and now a chapel hosting weddings. Another church in the Rondout is located at 72 Spring Street. Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church was founded in 1849. The original church building at the corner of Hunter Street and Ravine Street burned to the ground in the late 1850s. The current church on Spring Street was built in 1874.

    Kingston became New York's first capital in 1777, and was burned by the British on October 13, 1777, after the Battles of Saratoga. In the 19th century, the city became an important transport hub after the discovery of natural cement in the region, and had both railroad and canal connections.

    The town of Rondout, New York, now a part of the city of Kingston, became an important freight hub for the transportation of coal from Honesdale, Pennsylvania to New York City through the Delaware and Hudson Canal. This hub was later used to transport other goods, including bluestone. Kingston shaped and shipped most of the bluestone made to create the sidewalks of New York City.

    City of Kingston Department of Public Works Reminds Property Owners of Recycling Rules

    The City of Kingston's Department of Public Works wishes to remind property owners of rules and regulations related to recycling in the City of Kingston. Over the past few weeks, hundreds of property owners have been cited for refuse (trash) materials found in the blue recycling bins provided to each property. By including refuse in the blue bins, the recycled materials can become contaminated, resulting in the materials not being collected and the property owner being fined after a written warning. The fine is $85 for each instance of non-compliance.


    Here are examples of items that are ALLOWED in the blue totes:
    Milk/Fruit Juice Cartons
    Plastic Bottles, Tubs, Jugs and Jars (#1-#7, such as yogurt, cottage cheese, etc.)
    Glass Bottles, Aluminum Cans & Jars- Please rinse prior to recycling
    Lids from glass bottles & jars if separated from item
    Paper Egg Cartons
    Thin Cardboard Boxes (cereal, pasta, crackers, etc.)
    Corrugated Cardboard and Paper Bags
    Newspapers, Magazines, Catalogs, Junk Mail & Office Paper
    Hard backed books and phone books
    Wrapping paper
    Greeting cards
    Shoe boxes
    Tissue boxes
     
    Here are examples of items that are NOT ALLOWED in the blue totes:
    Styrofoam
    Pizza Boxes or any soiled cardboard
    Plastic Bags from shopping centers- many supermarkets will recycle these bags if returned!
    Shredded paper
    Diapers
    Light Bulbs
    Bedding, Sheets, Pillows
    Clothes
    Appliances
    Plastic Toys
    Storage Totes
    Scrap Metal
    Coated paper or plastics
    Plastic film or wrappers (packing or food)
    Condiment Packages
    Produce Baskets
    Utensils
    Latex & Plastic Gloves
    Flower Vases
    Drinking Glasses
    Windows/Broken Glass
    Potato Chip Bags
    Black Microwavable Plastic Containers
    Automotive Fluid Bottles
    Prescription Bottles
    Foil Pie Plates
    Any other trash items
     
    The support of all property owners will allow the City to continue to be a leader in recycling efforts in the region and to reduce the amount of money spent on refuse tipping fees and contaminated recycling fines.     El Departamento de Obras Públicas de la ciudad de Kingston Le Recuerda a Propietarios de las Siguientes Normas

    El Departamento de Obras Públicas de la Ciudad de Kingston le recuerda a propietarios de las normas y reglamentos relacionadas al reciclaje en la Ciudad de Kingston. En las últimas semanas, cientos de propietarios han sido citados por materiales de desechos (basura) encontrados en los recipientes azules de reciclaje provistos a cada propiedad. Si se incluyen desechos en los recipientes azules, los materiales reciclados se pueden contaminar. Dado este caso, los materiales no serán recogidos y el propietario será multado después de una advertencia por escrito. La multa es de $85 por cada ocasión de incumplimiento.


    Aquí los ejemplos de objetos que están PERMITIDOS en los recipientes azules:

    Cartones de Leche/Jugo de Frutas

    Botellas, Jarras, Frascos de Plástico (#1-#7, como yogur, queso cottage, etc.)

    Botellas de vidrio, Latas y Jarras de Aluminio- Favor de lavar antes de reciclar

    Tapas de botellas de vidrio y jarras, si están separadas del objeto

    Cartones de Huevos

    Cajas de Cartón Delgadas (cereal, pasta, galletas, etc.)

    Cartón Corrugado (Ondulado)  y Bolsas de Papel

    Periódicos, Revistas, Catálogos, Propaganda Postal & Papel de Oficina

    Libros y Directorios Telefónicos de Tapa Dura

    Papel de Regalo

    Tarjetas de Felicitación

    Cajas de Zapatos

    Cajas de Pañuelos

    Aquí ejemplos de objetos que NO ESTÁN PERMITIDOS en los recipientes azules:

    Espuma de poliestireno (Unicel) (Styrofoam)

    Cajas de Pizza o cualquier cartón sucio

    Bolsas de Plástico de centros comerciales - ¡muchos supermercados reciclan las bolsas si se devuelven!

    Papel triturado

    Pañales

    Bombillos

    Ropa de cama, Sabanas, Almohadas

    Ropa

    Aparatos Eléctricos, Electrodomésticos

    Juguetes de Plástico

    Contenedores de Almacén

    Chatarras, Metal Desechado

    Papel o plásticos recubiertos o estucados

    Papel plástico o envolturas plásticas (usadas para empacar comida)

    Paquetes de Condimentos

    Cestas de frutas y vegetales

    Cubiertos para comer

    Guantes de Látex y Plástico

    Floreros

    Vasos para beber

    Ventanas/Vidrio quebrado

    Bolsas de papitas fritas

    Contenedores de plástico negros para el microondas

    El apoyo de todos los propietarios le permitirá a la Ciudad continuar ser un líder en iniciativas de reciclaje en la región, y además reducir la cantidad de dinero gastado en cuotas de depósito de desechos y multas de reciclaje contaminado.
